Well, as if life wasn’t crazy enough it’s about to get a bit crazier. As some of you may know I started a job with a big name outdoor retailer a few months back and it hasn’t quite panned out like I was expecting. When I was initially offered the job they said that the hours would be between 15 and 32 which was fine with me since I had been unemployed for over 4 months (since I graduated from college in May last year).
I figured that it probably wasn’t going to be 32 hours since I have been involved in being on the team that opens a store before and know that business is anything but predictable (especially in an economy like this one). However, I was not expecting to receive a constant 15 hours a week. I am thankful to have that job, but no one can live on 15 hours a week unless they are some sort of tycoon, are a trust fund baby, or are something of the sort. Because of that I went in search of another job.
I debated working two jobs due to the hassle that can be associated with having two schedules to balance between places and what not, but I decided that I still really love my other job and love the employee discount that I get on all the gear that need to go the outdoor type activities like hiking and camping that I love to do, so I decided that I would deal with having two schedules.
Today was my first day working at a major coffee retailer. While it’s totally different from my current job as a sales person at the outdoor retailer, I think I will like it since it’s a lot like my old job I had before I went to college and earned my degree (which is now gathering dust in the dark reaches of my room somewhere). I mostly did paperwork and tried some new flavors of coffee today, but I already really like the team that I’ll be working with and the location is super close to my house which means that once there is more daylight I can ride my bike to work in less than 30 minutes. I guess I’ll need that extra exercise since I’m a coffee and coffee drink fanatic and I know I’ll be enjoying a few more coffee drinks that I normally do.
Anyway, that aside, I am really looking forward to working full time hours again. It may be a bit more hectic, but I’m excited to not have so much free time. Don’t get me wrong, I do appreciate free time to get errands done and to relax, but when I’m only working 15 hours a week I have too much free time and find myself with a lack of motivation to get things done since I can “do it later”. I also find myself in the kitchen more, even when I’m not hungry, so being busier will help to keep me from eating when I’m bored.
With that being said, if you don’t see much of me around these parts in the next few weeks don’t worry, I’m just adjusting to juggling two schedules and working on getting my workouts in and figuring out how to make my life work with this new addition.
What about you? What’s one of the biggest challenges you face when you have too much free time or not enough? What do you do to defeat the problems?
